Wakayama knit fabric makers seeking global attention

New York, Sept. 23 (Jiji Press) — Eight knitwear makers from Wakayama Prefecture in western Japan showcased their circular knit products created with traditional techniques at a three-day event in New York until Friday.

“We wanted people to touch the knitted fabrics made in Wakayama and feel the excellent craftsmanship,” said an official from one of the manufacturers.

People connected with the event aim to promote Wakayama’s knitted products not only to the garment industry, but also to consumers in general.

Wakayama is Japan’s largest producer of knitted products made using the circular knitting method to create three-dimensional fabrics. The local industry has a history of over 100 years.

Sweatshirts using locally made knit fabrics, in particular, are popular with luxury brands.
