It’s time to promote sustainable textiles, says Piyush Goyal | News from Coimbatore

Coimbatore: It is time for India’s textile sector to give a significant boost to promoting sustainable textiles by recycling garment materials, says Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal said here Wednesday.
Addressing a gathering virtually at the third annual Sustainable Apparel and Textile Recycling Conference, Goyal said that the textile recycling industry is mainly located in the United States, the European Union and China. “India does not properly use much of the waste generated in the textile sector. Unfortunately, this waste goes to landfills and is often incinerated for energy production instead of being recycled or reprocessed. However, we have a tremendous opportunity to become the source of sustainable clothing by taking into account pre- and post-consumer textile waste,” the minister said.
Textile units should work together for faster development in textile recycling, upcycling and creating sustainable fashion products for a sustainable future, Goyal said. “The use of sustainable textiles in hospitality, tourism, construction, automotive, sports, interior design, footwear, medicine and other fields is increasing.”
The Minister added that there was a need to manage releases of microplastics, hazardous chemicals and associated toxicity. “Sustainable textiles will create a thriving ecosystem and help our local communities by increasing the value of local production. It will also help reduce the amount of waste and cultivate green consumers. »
Responding to a question about the Union Government’s approach to sustainability, the Minister said the Center planned to promote “one district, one product” on the government’s electronic marketplace platform (GeM ).
The conference, organized by Management of Urdhvabrought together textile manufacturers, recyclers and recyclers with the aim of encouraging best practices in textile recycling and promoting business cooperation.
