Nature lovers know that there is an abundance of bird species in the world. Although it can be difficult to see many of them in person, artist Paulina Bartnik (aka Embirdery) immortalizes their portraits in beautiful embroidered brooches. She uses her meticulous sewing techniques to make every feathered creature look unique, from barn owls to hummingbirds.

“I chose the birds because of the beautiful colors, shapes and texture of the feathers,” Bartnik told My Modern Met. “To embroider them, I mainly use the needle painting technique which I think mimics bird feathers perfectly.” From a background of felt sheets, the artist creates a combination of short and long stitches in a variety of colors to produce a textile effect.

This way, Bartnik is able to give his brooches a sense of volume and depth. The faces of his embroidered birds all feature their distinct markings, making them look incredibly real. Not only that, but the variety of hues she uses to create the feathers make the texture of the bird appear to shimmer in the light.

You can buy quirky embroidered brooches through Bartnik’s Etsy shop and keep up to date with her latest projects by following her on Instagram.
