The City of Needham Swap Shop, located at the Recycling and Transfer Station (RTS), will become a seasonal operation starting this winter. The decision to close the workshop during the winter months came after the Department of Public Works (DPW) reviewed its winter operations plan to determine how best to keep the community safe during the season. ice and snow.
The new Swap Shop season will run from April 1 to November 30, in line with how DPW winter works.
“We know how much people appreciate the Swap Shop, and we are happy to be able to continue to host it when the weather is favorable for vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area,” said the director of public works, Carys Lustig. “However, our main mission is to ensure the safety and well-being of the community, which becomes much more difficult during snow and ice storms. schools, public buildings, sidewalks and parking lots are cleared for the public. We value the community’s understanding and look forward to continuing to provide access to the Swap Shop in a way that ensures the safety of volunteers, pedestrians and staff.
The Swap Shop is located near the entrance to the RTS, which means vehicles often enter the area at a higher speed. Those who buy items or donate items are close to vehicles entering and parking. In winter, with snow and ice, this configuration makes the area even more dangerous.
While the Swap Shop will close on December 1, RTS will continue to offer recycling of books and textiles in drop-off bins on site.
There are a number of community Facebook pages where people can post items they no longer need or want: Buy Nothing Needham, Needham Yard Sale, Be Kind Needham are just a few. Savers, located in West Roxbury also accepts many household items.
