A service and design resource center for weavers will be established in Kullu: Piyush Goyal


A weaver design and service resource center will be set up in Kullu to encourage attractive state handcraft products in addition to providing a better platform for exporting such products to the international market. Union Minister of Trade and Industry and Textiles Piyush Goyal made the announcement during an interaction program with crafts and hand craft artisans as part of the Seva and Samarpan on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the State of Himachal Pradesh in Kullu today. Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur chaired the function. Piyush Goyal said Himachal Pradesh has immense potential for craftsmanship and skill upgrading of artisans, modern equipment and training will be provided to prepare new quality models in the weavers’ service center. He said that more attention was needed to modernize the design, quality, packaging and marketing so that the weavers get a better price for their products in the international market. The Union Minister suggested to organize district exhibitions of these products in major cities, people associated with the textile industry and five-star hotels so that their branding can be done nationally and internationally. . He asked the weavers to get their mark for which the central government had reduced registration fees by 80%.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said the necessary steps have been taken to encourage the state’s artisans. At present, there are 13,572 registered weavers in the state whose livelihood was tied to the skill of weaving and embroidery. Chamba’s handkerchief as well as Kullu’s shawl and cap and Kinnaur’s shawl had received GI tags. In order to facilitate the online sales platform for the weavers, a memorandum of understanding had been signed with Flipkart and the department was also selling products online. Jai Ram Thakur said there has been a big change in the design and quality of crafts and hand-woven products in the state. over the past 50 years and thousands of families have made it a source of livelihood. He said that the crafts of Kullu districts, especially caps and shawls, are internationally recognized. When a head of state comes to India, the Prime Minister greets him with a kullavi cap and a silencer, which was a source of pride for the state. He urged the weavers to preserve traditional clothing as it was also associated with our culture. The chief minister said the tourism sector had been hit hard during the Covid crisis and the hand-weaving sector was no exception, affecting thousands of artisans. He said better management of Covid has been done in the state and he has been assured there is no shortage of oxygen and beds for patients. He thanked the central government for increasing the oxygen supply to 45 metric tons.

He said Himachal became the first state in the country to provide the first dose of corona to one hundred percent of the eligible population and that the second dose was also given to 47 percent of the people and that in the end November, Himachal would also become the first state. to give both doses to one hundred percent of the population. The Chief Minister thanked the Union Minister for responding to the state’s request for Weaver Service and Design Resource Center. The Union Minister and the Chief Minister visited the exhibition organized by the weavers. A short documentary on weaving looms and crafts was also screened on this occasion. Education, Arts, Languages ​​and Culture Minister Govind Singh Thakur said Himachal Pradesh was emerging as a model of development under the leadership of Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur. He said that Kullu district is now internationally recognized for its beauty, rich culture and crafts. Handicrafts and Handloom Corporation Managing Director Kumud Singh spoke about the state’s crafts. Handloom and Handicrafts Corporation Vice President Sanjeev Katwal moved the vote of thanks.
